Puhi Paka o Pele (This space eel may be haunted) - Oil on Canvas -36 × 36
When I moved into my old apartment there was a large painting of what I assumed was meant to be Pele. The proportions were off and she had a haunting gaze that seemed to follow you around the room. No matter where she hung she seemed discontent. As one does, I decided to paint a Puhi transcending space and time over the portrait. March 26 I I bought some orange oil paint , put on the USGS volcano live cam and began a base layer. I figured while it dried I would go for a walk in the national park and ask my forgiveness/blessing of Pele. Halfway thru painting I looked up and the volcano was sending up lava fountains 1000 feet in the air. I couldn’t believe it. I got to the park at dusk and Pele was putting on a show, the biggest lava fountain I had ever seen. When I was about to leave the flow abruptly stopped. I dont know if it was a blessing, curse or circumstance but I did my best to leave traces of her in the painting. I left her gazing out of the depths of space that the eel entered. The painting feels less haunted than before, but I dont fully trust it. Can never be to sure these days……
